Eco-hostel in the Caribbean

SINCE 2014

Eco-Hostel en el Caribe

The Casa

— a former Colombian holiday home – is a 25-year old wooden house built on a concrete foundation under the sea water. An eco-friendly backpackers hostel run by our cheerful, local crew. The hostel sits among the San Bernardo Islands, just two hours by boat from Cartagena.

It is you and your temporary family who decide whether to detox, unleash your inner yogi and enjoy the serene environment, or crank up the volume and get the drinks flowing. Whatever your choice may be, we dare to say we offer the best hangover cure in South America: a bed-to-ocean dive from the first floor deck into clear Caribbean waters.

Eco Friendly Hostel

Since 2014

Eco Amigable

Dry Toilets

Many guests laugh the first time they visit the Ladies or the Gents. Why the amusement? Eco means compost, so therefore we have dry toilets. Just make sure you pee in hole #1 and poo in hole#2 and ‘flush’ with a cup of sawdust lime mix. We collect your creations in a tanks and take it daily to Tintipan Island. There we have our composting operations based where we produce fertiliser.

Showers

We have Bucket showers! Just like the good ‘ole days! (It does add to the Robinson Crusoe feeling though). As this precious water is limited, you can only take evening showers.

At Tintipan Island we have two water tanks holding up to 100,000 liters of clean rainwater. Although this may sound like a lot of H2O, it’s unfortunately not.
The Casa uses about a 1000 liters daily, which is brought over in jerry cans on a boat every evening.

Trash

We separate our trash as much as possible here at the Casa. Once a month, a big ship cruises to the islands to collect the garbage from the area and to take it to the mainland.
We use the organics from the kitchen and bar to make our own compost, which is also used to make fertiliser. We reuse the glass bottles from the bar for bricks and decoration. With the aluminium cans from the bar, we started a project with the locals and other hostels to collect as many as possible, which can be sent to the mainland to be sold for recycling. This money will go towards building a new football field for our local football team on Islote!

Community

We are proud of our friendly, cheerful, and hardworking local staff. Almost the entire crew lives with their families on the Island of Islote, with a few others coming from the mainland. Casa en el Agua has created employment opportunities for the local people, creating a positive effect on their lives with particular reference to wealth and access to healthcare. We aim to both learn from, and educate, them about conservation and preservation of the sea life and mangroves, working in conjunction with the the National Park.

National Park

The casa sits among the the San Bernardo islands, and is part of “Parque Natural National Corales de Rosario y San Bernardo.” Established in 1977 and covering 1,200km squared, The park holds the most extensive, diverse and developed coral reef in the entire Colombian Caribbean continental coastline. The park aims protect the marine ecosystems & coral reefs, which are living in depths of up (or down!) to 30 meters. The park is home to 170 species of fish, 52 types of coral and 25 sponges in a stunning rainbow of colours. The flora is characterised by mangroves and seagrass beds.

Showers

We have normal showers.

Repellent

Sometimes we even have mosquitos in paradise, so be prepared for these annoying biting creatures and bring some repellent.

Sunscreen

Bring plenty of high SPF, we mean plenty! (plus, tanning oil is so 60’s) Some aftersun or aloe is also recommended.

Alcohol

Sorry guys, bringing your own alcohol is not permitted. Therefore we have our ‘bar en el agua’ with fresh cocktails, beers etc.

No WiFi

We encourage you to spend a few days screen free – to enjoy the view, live in the moment, read a good book, cool down with a few cervezas and work on your social skills.

No <18

We do love kids, as we have plenty local kids around in the nearby islands. The casa is just not a save place for them.

NATURAL PARK

…smack bang in the middle of glorious mother nature. We ask that you, as our guest, help us maintain our little slice of paradise with recycling, saving water etc.

Bucket shower

Our precious collected rain water is limited, we only do evening showers. Like the good old days (a Robinson Crusoe feeling) 1 bucket a person. Just spoon it up with a cup and throw it over yourself, easy!

Solar powerrr

We try to rely on solar power as much as possible at the casa and our watt hours are precious. Please charge all your items before you come and be energy conscious with us.

POO’S AND PEE’S

Eco means compost, therefore we have dry toilets! Pee in hole #1- goes to our septic under the house. Poo in hole #2 – and ‘flush’ with a cup of assassin. We collect this on our compost land on Tintipan Island.

Cash is king

As you may understand, the local fisherman don’t have bank accounts.. So please bring enough Pesos Colombianos and we can pay them for the delicious fresh caught seafood on your plate.

WARM CLOTHES

Although it is generally HOT during the day, evenings can cool down. Therefore, we advise to bring some warmer items along with your Brazilian thong bikini and tight, white, speedos..

Bags

Our house is not the biggest mansion in the world so space is limited. We suggest that you leave your bulky Louis V. or backpack on the mainland. And bring MAXIMUM 8 KILO.
